I have a question which would benefit from someone who has been around a good deal longer than I have been.

Some of you may be familiar with the Tellitubbies, the British children entertainment show. Most were content to accept these four suited up fantasy characters as harmless, until a Polish MP blasted the show because she considered one of them (the purple one) to be especially gay and therefore a bad influence on the children watching the show.

This was something I found most amusing, but it brought another question to mind. Have political and social commentators also caused similar outcry over other childrens' entertainment characters?

I can think of one which sticks out like a sore thumb, and that is Snagglepuss. Yes, it should have occurred to you by now; the pink cat who talks with the effeminate accent and says 'heavens to mergaroid' all the time is not just suspiciously gay, he is outright CAMP!

So did commentators also in the past resort to outcry over characters like these, or is the tellitubbie blasting a symbol of an increasingly sensatised and intolerant strain of homophobia in our own times?

All I know is that when I was younger I wasn't allowed to watch Bear in the big blue House. I think my dad heard a rumour that the big bear was a big GAY!!! Seriously, thats a true story. Shocking innit?

Every age has its critics. I wouldn't lose sleep over someone claiming that Tellitubbies have a detrimental influence on children. That 's what the remote is for. On the other hand I've never been the same either since I watched Mister Ed the Talking Horse.

What it is to have emerged from a television-free childhood.

But then what about Rupert Bear and his 'best friend' Bill Badger? Yellow trousers, red jumper, yellow scarf....and plaid at that.

I ask you!

LOL, I'm not camp Seko, but that Tellitomato is a winner! What a find (or creation)! Thumbs Up

Still hoping someone can give me some feedback on the public's reception to the introduction of Snagglepuss Smile

P.S. Parnell - 'the Big Bear' - my gosh that has gay written all over it LOL
