I was thinking about this and yes only wild animals.

1. Once we went camping in the Grand Canyon of Arizona and while asleep I felt these two little hands feeling my then thick mantle of hair. I thought it was my friend's dog so I yelled out its name and turned over. It was a small desert spotted skunk. They are much cuter than the striped skunk.

2. Another time I was asleep while camping in the Bitterroot mountains of Idaho but not realizing a huge moose towered over me and sniffed. It must have decided I was not edible and moved on. My friend saw the whole thing and laughed.

3. Once while camping in S. California on the Sespe Creek I was sitting in my tent. I heard something big approaching my tent so I let out a big roar and I heard something big crashing through the oak forest. The next morning I found big black bear tracks.

Great encounters, those are adventages of living in continents...

I live in a small island so here the most impressive animals are small reptils and birds so the encounters aren't impressive. It's winter, the grass is green and the temperature is cool to cold, in these conditions lizards sleep in caves but sometimes the sun shine without clouds; few days ago i was walking by the country with my dog, and in the middle of the way i saw it: a great male canarian lizard of 50-60 cms like this (Gallotia Stehlini)

Brown to grey, he was eating grass and flowers when we appeared and when he saw us he stopped, freezed, my dog who was running didn't see the lizard fortunatelly and jumped without stop (he kill sometimes these lizards), when i approached to only 1 metre he only was looking me with his black eyes, without move a muscle but with an arrogant pose, cautious a i turn by his side and follow the way.  To see so close this reptil and his rare skin and phisical features in the middle of the green grass bring me memories of dinos, it's strange but always feel very worried in front of reptils, you feel how different living being we are.

Unfortunatelly i hadn't the camera that day Ouch

that is one cool looking lizard!! Looks like a dinosaur or sort of! Now that I live in Arizona we have lots of big lizards and two posinous ones- the Gila Monster and the Mexican beaded lizard. I have yet to see one though and would like to from a distance. There was a javelina or wild pig outside of my new place last week. They are a North American native and smaller than the European wild boars, still dangerous.

I think that these two are probably my most interesting stories.

Between the bus stop and my house there is quite alot of empty land behind some houses, just filled by long grass and a few trees with a concrete walking tracking going through it. I was walking through it one day (on the path) when I saw only about 2 meters from me a crow that was swooping, pecking, and deliberately irritating a brown snake. It was using a low branch of a tree as a base to escape the reach of the brown snake, while periodically flying down to annoy it.
Now all I can say is, I think this bird must have had a death wish because Brown Snakes are really quite dangerous! Needless to say, I wasn't hanging around only a couple meters away from a pissed off brown snake. So I made a careful exit as quickly as I could.

My other great animal story was a fully fledged battle I witnessed between a group of Bull Ants and little black ants. Bull Ants are about a centre meter long, while black ants about 2mm, so the Bull Ants have a size and strength advantage. Black ants however can deliver quite a sting when they bite a human, so I expect it must be really painful to a Bull Ant.
When I started watching there were about 7-8 bull ants trying to fight off a horde of black ants. Each bull ant had been attacked by numerous black ants. The black ants would bite into the legs of the bull ant and hold on, the bull ants in an attempt to remove the black ant would rip the body off the black ant. Usually leaving its decapitated head still holding onto the bull ant's leg. Some of the bull ants that had been killed had obviously been overwhelmed by the black ants. Usually there were several black ant corpses and heads around and in the bull ants body. The bull ants were relying on superious physical strength & size, while the black ants were relying on numbers and probably their poision. I watched it for about half an hour, the Bull Ants ended up loosing the battle.

I surprised your friend laughed! Moose are responcible for more deaths on humans then bears. Supposedly it's not very hard to upset one and get it to charge, especially in rutting season.

What does a bull ant look like? I have seen documentaries about Brown snakes, much worse than any rattle snake or even our deadly coral snake.
I use to love to watch ant wars when I was a kid visiting my Greek relatives in upstate New York. I remember watching one battle between some red and black ants and a much larger brown ant accidently walked through their battle field and also got decapitated. Our black ants usually do not have a bad sting or any sting but watch out for the red ones- I am glad we don't have fire ants here. Arizona is different than Washington state so I will have to learn what to watch out for. A lot of things sting, bite or burn you here. I think in Washington state we had one variety of rattle snake - the timber rattler and then black widow spiders, Hobo spiders and the brown recluse- the latter is not a native. They do not have wood ticks here but they have some wierd beatle that can climb into bed with you and bite and suck your blood. They leave a nice welt!! The rattle snakes sun themselves outside my brother's house sometime so you have to watch it. The wild javelina or wild pigs make me nervous at night, sharp tusks.
Are skunks native to Europe at all? nasty creatures who can carry rabbies.

now here is a coral snake:
It looks a lot like a king snake so the poem to tell the difference is:
red and yellow kill a fellow - red and black friend of jack- refers to their bands. I have seen plent of King snakes in my life but never a coral snake- Australia is the capital of poisonous snakes though. Do you have poisonous lizards? We have two in the desert southwest.

Yeah I know but it was in the summer by some famous hot springs in Idaho- Jerry Johnson hot springs which are named after a mountain man they made a movie out of in the 1970's (Jerimiah Johson). The foundation of his cabin are still there with the pipes still intact to bring in hot spring water for floor heat. I was driving through the same area on the way to Montana and saw a huge moose off the road, I slowed down fast. I thought it was part of a US Forest Service sign at first but still wreary I watched it till the moose moved. I think this one was about 2000 pounds give or take a few pounds. It is bad enough having a 600 pound rocky mountain elk jump in front of your car while driving, I have had this happen many times. If I hit a moose with my truck it would kill me but maybe an elk I might survive.

This is what I am calling a Bull Ant (I just discovered the govt calls them carpenter ants)

and a black ant. Scales don't match.

Nope, no poisonous lizards. Some can bite pretty hard but none are dangerous

we also have a carpenter ant in the pacific northwest but I did not realize they are worse than termites to wooden structures. Wood is so abundant in the NW that most homes are wooden. I usually see them while hiking in the pine tree forests of that area but they are harmless to people but big for ants.

I do worry about rattle snakes around my place in the summer. The desert here is so rich with wildlife and even has an abundance of deer. mountains lions and wild pigs. It will be fun to explore the wildlands here and have more wild animal encounters.

a worse scenario- one encounter I can do without!! lol

Although we here in Denmark have a rich fauna, we don't have any wild creatures that really can do you any harm.
We only have two species of snakes - and only one of them are poisonous. The other one, a nonvenomous black adder or viper plays an important role in the following.

Around the age of 13 or 14, my brother and I once caught a big black adder (3-4 feet) and brought it home with us - I had it inside my shirt.
We were not sure what mom and dad would say to have a snake for a pet, so in order to have a little time to prepare them, we didn't say anything at first but threw it out on the bathroom floor and closed the door.

While sitting in the living room, trying to find a way to approach the matter and convey it to  our parents, the front door opened and closed again.
Two seconds later we heard the most horrifying and hysterical screaming from the bathroom. My older sister had come home from work in dire need of a toilet, and when she opened the door and stepped into the bathroom, it was sitting in the middle of the floor hissing at her...

It took quite a while to calm her down - and we were told to put it back where we found it Ouch

That is a good one- a lot of women do not like snakes.

I remember while riding my bike through the forests around the town of Cheney I saw a large snake slithering across the dirt road. The snake saw me or really sensed me and curled up and made a loud hissing noise. I am very sure it was a gopher snake because of the colors and they try to pretend they are rattle snakes. After it curled up it started to shake its tail like a rattle snake and while their bite would hurt they are not poisonous. They only have timber rattle snakes up there around Spokane but here in Arizona they have several species of rattle snakes and they are much bigger. The Mojave greenback is the most deadly of them all and I prefer to stay clear of this one. I am sure I will have enounters with rattle snakes and hopefully live to talk about it-

This is another critter I want to encounter around here but carefully since they hunt in packs and are quite vicious.

They are in the racoon family which we also have here and I am sure I will encounter on one of my hikes.

More wild animal encouters!!
Boy, last night the javlina or wild pigs were noisy around my place. Makes me a bit nervous to go out at night. I read about a Dutch man who was seriously attacked by a javelina in some nature/museum park in Tucson, AZ. He has filed a law suit for losses.

I remember hiking in the Seven Devil mountains of Idaho and a mountain goat with kids kept coming into our camp and not in the least afraid of us. The Seven Devils are extremely jagged and incredibly beautiful. They border Oregon and Idaho.

We don't have anything really exotic around here - lots of wildlife but it is mostly mundane, raccoons and rabbits and deer, a few wild turkeys and assorted other animals.

On one occasion, I was taking a rest in the forest, heard a noise behind me, and turned to stare face to face with something that had been sniffing the back of my shirt. In that first millisecond I really had no idea what I was looking at, all I saw was a mammal larger than a dog that had somehow managed to creep up right next to me without being noticed, and I was terrified. I shrieked, and it went bounding off at high speed ... it took a few seconds for it to process in my mind, and then I finally realized it had just been a young fawn.

Maybe it was a friendly grizzly bear!! What province are you in? I have backpacked in BC Canada numerous times.

when I was a kid an alligator bit me-

Belisarius   where is Mt Evans??

I once saw a herd of Big horn sheep in King Canyon National Park, in the Sierra Nevada Mtns of California. I have also seen them in the Rocky mountains along with Rocky mountain goats.

I was looking at some old slides, from a hike in the Seven Devil mountains of Idaho, of a herd of rocky mtn goats- it is nice to experience wild animals. The whole herd came into our camp but ignored us, still does not mean I will pet them. I also love tracking animals and I can usually recognize most animal tracks. I remember while hiking over the Piegan pass in Glacier National Park in Montana I found some wolverine tracks and a wildlife biologist friend confirmed it. I have also tracked mtn lions in the snow and sighted them from afar. A rare sight!! My older brother was sitting by the camp fire in the Gila wilderness area of New Mexico and he looked up and saw a pair of glowing eyes- it turned out to be a mountain lion. It was sitting there just simply watching him by the camp fire, I do not think it was a threat. Maybe it was interested in one of his dogs for a mid-night snack-
