This site gives a good list,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sieges
However I disagree, personally I'd go for the siege of Troy.

If sieges count I'd say the Siege of Cuba

think it was the longest. The battle ended when a janissary got a hold on the king, killed him and put his head on top of a spear.

I've read that battles have become longer as time progressed, the battle of the Marne in ww1 smouldered for weeks. I think this has to do with the ability to constantly feed in reinforcements and supplies. IN days gone by you used what you had brought with you and that was it, by the industrial revolution you could prop up failure and prolong battles for ages. This is different to old style sieges where a lot of time was spent on starvation, bombardment and mining rather than actual battle.

Sieges, technically, aren't battles..by definition sieges are longer than battles. A siege can include battles.
As for Troy..the method of warfare back then didn't even have the concept of a siege. Agammemnon didn't blockade, didn't attept to subdue the enemy..it was a set of disorganized melees outside the walls, accompanied by marauding greeks pillaging the countryside and contingents of trojans sallying outside every once in a while.
My vote goes to a battle between the Han dynasty under Han Wu Di, and the Huns, in 121 BC. The cavalry battle supposedly lasted a full seven days. Their Khan was killed, and almost 20 thousand troops taken prisoner. The point of the battle was to secure the trade routes through Sinkiang, which it did quite admirably did.

A battle lasts weeks when pig headed Generals keep feeding men into the meat grinder in the vain hope that it is doing some good. When armies number in the millions and the battle lines are static this become possible, that is why ww1 was so tragic. IN ww1 the infantry and cavalry generals who were in charge should have been replaced by siege artillery and engineer generals, who are used to being patient and having many small successes rather than big dramatic successes.
