Does anybody know why San Marino is still independent? I guess until 1860 it was one of the many Italian states. Why wasn't it incorporated into Italy during the Risorgimento?

More or less. It's so small, and there is nothing in its area (such as raw materials, etc.) to justify an invasion.

Finally, in many way Italy does control the small republic without taking away its nominal independence.

Officialy not an EU member, but they do use the currency, have their own local version even. I think they have a customs union with Italy anyways, so they are economicly in even if are politicly out, same as with the Vatican, Monaco etc.
Population is 28,000, mostly a mix of Italian and Sanmarinese (Italians in Denial )
