Topic: Numbers and/or colors of the tribes Posted: 20-Oct-2007 at 09:43 |
...Correctly of the tribe unions...
For exemple gokturk (blue turc), saraogur (yellow ogur), on ok (ten arrows), karakalpag (black hats), roxolans (white alans), htmagyar (seven hungarians), tokuz oguz (nine oguz), ala yontlug (?)(dont know the correct turkic name, sorry) (the people of the pied horses) , c karluk etc.
What's the origin of these names? The color of the battle horses, or the color of the tugs or of the flags? How did the organisation of such a tribe union look like? What do you know about this?

ala is red
Karluk, I have heard is qarliq, which means snowy, but not sure still.
I believe the origin is from different beliefes. For example, Gok Turks had Gok Tanri (Blue God). This might be a source.
Ten Ok's, may be of some epos, or national poem of Oguz Khan, I am not sure though.
will post later, need to go, sorry

In southern Turkman, ala implies a mixture of two colors.
Ghizil or Kizil is red.

The numbers usually stood for the number of clans that comprised the tribes, and the colors were usually symbolic of something else. Blue is associated with heaven, so to call something blue can be like calling it heavenly or favored by heaven. Yellow and white are also considered royal colors. White and black were sometimes used to mean greater or lesser. For example after the Khitans were defeated in China they created a new empire in the west and people called it Khara Khitai, "Black Khitai", which really meant "little Khitai."

Southern Turkmen
Qeep ghizil = blood red
[Q = Qaf (arabic) Gh = Ghayn (arabic)]
Are there different dialects within Turkey?
What is the origin of 'Al' (red)?
Beyaz = White
Kirmiz = Red

I think numbers stood for number of clans form an ethnic group, colors for direction of clans settlement. Al is Mongol word for red. Bayaz is Arabic comes from abyaz. Colors which shows more saturation:
Yashil-Yabyashil: green Sarigh-Sabsarigh: yellow Aq-Appaq: white Qara-Qabqara: black Qizil-Qibqizil: red Kok-Komkok: blue
For the mixture of colors:
Ala: mixed black and white Chopar: checked

I have the impression that Khara actually means great or west. Kharabalasaghun, Kharaqotu were the capital cities, which should be meant to be great.
Kharaqitan and Kharahanid both were the the kingdoms built in the west with respect to the kingdoms they built in the east .
Qocho meants Turpan, and Qaraqochu meant Kucha, which is in the west of Turpan.
