Topic: Dialogues Unforgotten (Film History) Posted: 10-Oct-2007 at 19:29 |
I dont mean the moments, Sandy and Bud were calling their Dolphin, but i mean Dialogues in movies, that are unforgotten or legendary.
Like Casablanca 1942: "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
But my favourite is:
Hawkins: I've got it! The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true! Right? Griselda: Right! -- but there's been a change: they broke the chalice from the palace...
Hawkins: They broke the chalice from the palace?
Griselda: ...and replaced it. With a flagon.
Hawkins: A flagon?
Griselda: With the figure of a dragon.
Hawkins: Flagon with a dragon.
Griselda: Right.
Hawkins: ...but did you put the pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle?
Griselda: No! The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon! The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!
Hawkins: The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon, the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.
Griselda: Just remember that!
The Court Jester 1956!
What's yours?

Casablanca has others.
"Of all the bars in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."
And of course:
Ilsa Lund: Play it once, Sam. For old times' sake.
Sam: [lying] I don't know what you mean, Miss Elsa.
Ilsa Lund: Play it, Sam. Play "As Time Goes By."
Sam: [lying] Oh, I can't remember it, Miss Elsa. I'm a little rusty on it.
and, later,
Rick: You played it for her, you can play it for me!
Sam: [lying] Well, I don't think I can remember...
Rick: If she can stand it, I can! Play it!
It had one of the worst titles of all time, but The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer (Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Shirley Temple) had this, which seems to get quoted everywhere without the source:
You remind of the man.
What man?
The man with the power.
What power?
Voodoo.
You do?
Do what?
Remind me of the man
....

from Dr. Strangelove General Jack D. Ripper:
Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake:
No, I don't think I do, sir, no.
General Jack D. Ripper:
He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said
that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too
important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the
training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer
sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination,
Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap
and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

I just saw this movie about 4 days ago (again!), but isn't it a bit ironic coming from a nut like General Ripper?!

What, having an insight about Clemenceau.... or the brilliant theory that a global communist conspiracy was causing his impotence?

from Patton
Translator:
The general would like to know if you will drink a toast with him.
Patton:
Thank the general and tell him I have no desire to drink with him or any other Russian son of a b****.
Translator:
[Nervous] I can't tell him that!
Patton:
Tell him, every word.
Translator:
[In Russian] He says he will not drink with you or any Russian son of a b****.
Russian general:
[In Russian] Tell him he is a son of a b****, too. Now!
Translator:
[Very nervous] He says he thinks you are a son of a b****, too.
Patton:
[Laughing] All right. All right, tell him I'll drink to that; one son of a b**** to another.
