I live in a small rural town where the library is the size of a small room. I go to school in another town, in another state. I've already been to the library in the town I go to school in which is large around here, and there is a 2 month suspension period for all new members where you can check out only two books. I've already used 1 of those check outs.

Okay. Now that you know my situation I will ask my question. Could anyone please refer me to an online resource for middle age Scotland 1280-1500 that has a lot of information? Including culture, clothing, military equipment, military strategies, architecture, and politics!

Hey Ulrich;

I'm no expert in Scottish history or anything, and you have probably come across these sites by now, but if not, you may want to check out the following:

Good luck!

About: Medieval History - Scotland

Witchcraft in Medieval Scotland

ScotClans - Medieval Scotland

"Common Law & Feudal Society in Medieval Scotland" by Hector L MacQueen - read online

Ulrich, I too have a local library the size of a shoe box - and with very little in the way of "good" history sources.

However, when you can borrow - get a hold of "The Black Douglases: War and Lordship in Late Medieval Scotland 1300 - 1455" by Michael Brown (Pub: John Donald (Publishers) UK 2005).

Well if you have money to spare you could always pay a visit to amazon. That is what I would do in your situation if I had plenty of cash to spare.

I do not know how primitive your library is, or how the library system over there is, and where exactly you live, so this info might be useless, but here goes:

- If there is an universitiy library accessable from where you are, it is generally possible to become a member of one even when not a student.

- Some libraries have the option of ordering books to loan from other libraries in the country, against a fee.

-some even have the possibility of ordering books from libraries abroad, against a rather large fee...

- Amazon also sells second hand books (the English one anyway, I presume other versions too), I once bought a second hand book for my studies there and paid less including international postal than then new sold out version would have costed in the shop here.

- there must be may more second hand bookstores and sites you can use. Check them regularly for bargains, and also try putting an advertisement for a book you are looking for in particular on online bootsale-sites. Always works for me.

- write a letter to your library explaining how their idiotic 2 book rule is insane and is actually against the government's policy of improving literacy and learning in the country (which I presume you have, all countries do), and therefore unpatriottic.

Women hold their councils of war in kitchens: the knives are there, and the cups of coffee, and the towels to dry the tears.

Find a library with JSTOR if possible. If not just use internet sources.

I'd agree with that, but if you have always been enthusiastic in the subject that you want to study at uni, then it's probable that you would have loads of books on the subject already. Also, second hand bookshops are a great resource - sure, you won't get the latest research, but you'll get some of the best classic tomes for good prices. Also, they need the money - don't let the capitalistic bookshops take over!

These have a few books on Medieval Scotland, however, you would need to register:
