I am not familiar with any Oghuzname (Book of the Oghuz). However, there are Ergenekon myths, Book of Dede Korkut and the Gokturk Totem/ Orhun inscriptions that contain stories of the Oghuz destan. The Oghuz were previously known as Ok or tribe (Sekiz, Dokuz Ok. Each designation relates to arrows. The steppe peoples culture were heavily influenced by lifestyle). The Oks or Oghuz were a grouping of Turk peoples and the name predates the Gokturks.

I have it at home, we usually being told parts if it at High School by Nationalist Teachers, always bringing up an Armenian problem in the middle of nowhere Tongue

Actually, it is not known when it was written. In fact , it an epos, Halk Dastani, and cannot be known when it was created. It doesnt matter who wrote it down becouse most people knew it in Central Asia in Middle Ages, i am sure.

About Oghuzname:

I hope members from Turkey can translate the above in English. it has modern Uyghur version here:

Seko, I think Oghuz and Oq (arrow) are different terms, although both were used as tribal names. Oghuz wasn't plural form of Oq, otherwise we have to answer these questions:

1. What about the much earlier form of Oghur?

2. There were On Oq, Buz Oq, Uch Oq etc tribal unions, although with the plural numbers such as On (ten), Uch(three), they didn't get the form of On oghuz or Uch Oghuz.

Oghuz should be the later form of Oghur. ("Z" turkic variation)
Either make a history or become a history.

From my understanding some of the Oks were part of the Oghuz federation originally sons of Oghuzhan. Maybe you could help me out with this one.

"Towards the 1300's the Western Turks, and Uyghurs (with Uyghur script), wrote the best epic: Oghuzname. Today in Paris' International (?) Library resides this written epic. The Turks belief in many gods and paganism was being praised, they were some of the important events at the time of Cengiz Khan."

Hope I didn't mess that one up too much.
