I am an avid writer.  I've written many poems and short stories but decided to finally fulfill my dream and write a novel.
 
I want my novel to be based (perhaps loosely) in the Caribbean anywhere from the 1600s to the early 1700s.  The problem is my knowledge of history isn't as good as I would like it to be in this era for the Caribbean.  I was hoping to find some ideas from those that are knowledgable in this area.
 
The novel will be action-based.  Looking for ideas on soldiers, sailors or pirates from Spain, England or France.  Perhaps a series of famous battles or interesting stories.  Would prefer it to contain a fair amount of combat but it isn't a requirement.
 
I know it's vague but hopefully you can help me out and drum up some ideas.
