The dutch TV - producers Endemol are planning a tv show, where three candidates will have a chance to win a kidney transplantation. A german paper reported yesterday, that this new tv-concept will be realised in Holland very soon.

Three patients, who are waiting for a kidney transplantation, will get the chance, by playing ability- and ken-games, to get a healthy organ.

This is not a joke or a spawn of my bloomy fantasy. This is the reality of 2007. The reality of a private broadcast station.

Can you imagine a more distasteful program ?
To play games with the desperation of persons to get a better quote ?

Actually it has already started. The aim of the program makers is to make young people more aware of the need for organ donors. The politics are not happy with it, but they cannot forbid it: it is legal to give away your own organ by life. The only question is where the transplant is taking place, as hospitals and clinicks do not seem eager to join.

The organ by the way, is as yet still in the body of a woman who has a inoperable brain tumor. She is the one who will choose who gets her kidney.

The show is being made by a broadcasting group known for its controversial programs. The founder of the group was a kidney patient himself, who died of his condition some years ago, which is probably where the idea came from.

Women hold their councils of war in kitchens: the knives are there, and the cups of coffee, and the towels to dry the tears.

Nope...it's awesome.

I can't wait to see the faces of the two losers; "oh sorry, chaps, guess you'll have to pay up or die, eh?" Not to forget the winner; "yay! Now I just have to wait for that woman to die...how long do these brain tumors take anyway."

Well I'd say that I'd never watch it more than once (hey I'm curious). And yes it is quite disgusting, but after all why not.

Many times in the previous years I saw TV programs where the aimm was to collect money for NGOs. It was a bit more hypocritical, but fundamentally it was the same.

Besides, lets the market decide if people find it distasteful, they won't watch it.

Moreover, it reality it is what happens, with more people needing kidney transplant than organs actually given away, many lose at this awful lottery.

Bottom line one person will be saved and frankly the other will increase their own chance of survival while increasing (less) the chances of other people, so why not? Only consenting adults right?

What really must have been awfull was the selection of the three

I predict, despite the somewhat questionable format, that this is yet another in a long line of foriegn (non-Dutch) press taking potshots at the Netherlands and overhyping it in the process. Seems to have started with 'Neuken doe je zo', perhaps because journlists in othe rcountries were miffed that Big Brother was so successfull in their countries (whilst in the Netherlands it flopped), and had to shine their critical media theory torches up the collective arse of the Dutch world.

Endemol is Spanish anyways. Jon de mol sold it, for 2 billion, and its now worth 600 million, i bet he's pleased with that.

I actually have a solid opinion on this. I think it is good!

Here is why: this show will undoubtedly play on the cheapness of reality TV and delve into the private torment of these three unfortunate souls as they bemoan their dread of imminent death from lack of a transplant.

In true reality TV style, the cameras will slide across their striken faces as they clutch loved ones in an hour of despair, or try to keep us rooted to our chairs as they air the somehow discomfiting scene of a kidney dialysis machine at work.

The three will be used to get ratings. Only one of them will come off with the kidney. But think of how a show like this could get your average person thinking about becoming organ donors. Imagine what would happen if they put up organ donation details right before the add break or during the credits......

Man that is just sick. My organs are for me, and me alone. If an emergency arose, however, I would be willing to help out a family member or friend. If I die I'm not having my body ripped apart and my organs harvested. I find that very disturbing and twisted.

Oh, they can have it all when I am dead. After all, I will be dead, so why would I care? Else it will just go to the worms anyway.

Well, the first show is due tomorrow, so I will be reding about it in the papers saturday. I'm curious. The makers of this programme, BNN, have made several other programmes about young people with horrible diseases, and each and every time the press was screaming freakshow, and each and every time it turned out to be sensitive and interesting human TV, so there is a good chance this might turn out to be better than it looks.

As for the losers: they will still be on the waitinglist like they were before, , so they won't be any worse off. Better to have a chance of one in three than none at all. Perhaps they will be even better off, if a lot of watchers decide to sign up as a donor.

Anyway, I think that, in this in as usual, the international press is way too early with its judgement. How on earth do you know if it will be distasteful before you have seen it? And besides, I am really doubtful it has even a chance of being more distasteful than Temptation Island, or some other programs we have had in the past.

Whatever gave you the idea it flopped? The first Big Brother was a huge success, that is why they sold it so widely. It wan't until episodes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, and several attempts by other networks to copy the program (the BUS), that people stopped watching.

I know it makes me a bad person but my first thought was

We should be harvesting all reality TV contestants for organs.

This seems a little ghoulish to me but hopefully the forore will bring attention to the problems and the show will be quitely dropped.

Thats exactly it, it died after the first season, where as in other countries its still going strong. BB8 just started in the UK. Comparitivly, the Dutch one was a flop, at best a one hit wonder, not quite the enduring sucess its exported cousins are.

Anyway, I think that, in this in as usual, the international press is way too early with its judgement.

Rest assured, they'll lose interest fast. I'm still waiting for an update on the non-existant peadophile party from a mainstream non-Dutch news source, surely they must run th ecountry now in a coalition with the facists and the islamists LOL

letting people decide by SMS who will die and who not, that's probably the most tasteless tv program that has ever existed. And knowing BNN and Endemol it has more to do with seeking sensation and controversy than actually making a point. (In fact the kidney foundation opposes the program) They can empty me completely as well after I'm dead, I don't need it anyway. As long as they don't give my organs to a Big Brother participant...

too bad the Netherlands have become the world's nr. 1 source of trash tv. Unhappy

I'm still waiting for an update on the non-existant peadophile party from a mainstream non-Dutch news source,

It didn't manage to collect enough signatures to participate in last years election (and if I'm not mistaken you need only a few dozen) but it still exists.

IIRC the latest news was that a judge decided that the University of Nijmegen was allowed to throw one of the party's members out of the orthopedagogy (sp?) study.

Turns out it was just more guerilla marketing to bring more attention to people who need organ transplants.

Ok, every thing was a fake.

Last night the moderator of the dutch tv-station declared, just before the assumed kidney-donator would choose the gainer of the organ, that the lady was an actress. The three patients however, are waiting for a transplantation, but were informed about the"game".

The tv-station reported a massive response to their project, and that, so the reporter, was the only concern of them.
They want to wake up the audience , to sensitise for organ-donation.
And that's, i must say, was what they made.

Told ya'll it was overhyped.
When foreign media sl*gs off Dutch TV for something that hasn't even been screened yet. Its likely to be aload of bollucks.

Still, nice twist, I love BNN even more though, hell, i could even start to like Endemol.

Well, so far it looks like there might be some results...
About 37.000 donor application forms have been requested by people. It will take about two months before any conclusions can be drawn of the number of people actually signing up.

I think it was a masterly plot. And kept secret for so long... most of the employess of the network were not in on it, most of them are still a bit stunned from the number of reactions they got...LOL
