I would say the greatest blunder was when the Alllies allowed Germany to re-occupy Rhineland, the demilitarized zone in Western Germany. The German Army that marched into this zone was poorly equipped and could easily have been destroyed. This would have meant humiliation for Hitler, and perhaps a change of policy within Germany.
The French wanted to strike, but only with British cooperation. The British refused, so the French did not attack.
Sorry, recovery then. Not re-occupation because that suggests conquest.
I am not saying that it was wrong for Germany to take it back. It was indeed an injustice to take a chunk of German territory and occupy it. What I am saying is that if French beat back the German troops here, Hitler would have lost support significantly within German home territory.
Kind of like Argentine dictator losing support when he lost in Falklands War against Brits.
