....hi everyone...

..Does anybody have any information or ideas regarding the connections, if any, between the ex-Soviet republic of Georgia and England?....

... I ask because England's patron saint is St George and the Georgian national flag is a red cross on white background, and quite similar to the English flag??..beyond this i have no other info but would be interested to hear from anyone who could add something?...

..thank you in advance....

As I recall--and I would like someone to validate this, if possible--Richard the Lionhearted brought the cult of Saint George back to England with him. The dragon has been interpreted as being symbolic of the devil, paganism, and a large array of other objects, ideologies, and persons. I would imagine that Wikipedia has a comparative article on Saint George in the Western and Eastern traditions, which would undoubtedly show how he came to be venerated in England.

I do know that in one of the footnotes to the Ecclesiastical History of Socrates Scholasticus (in the Nicene and Post Nicene fathers series), the editor notes that the Arian heretics had their own version of the legend of Saint George. I could dig up the quote for you, if you wish.

Sorry I couldn't do any research on this, but I have to jet. God bless.

...thank you very much indeed for the information Akolouthos, interesting stuff indeed..i kinda guessed there might be some form of cross-cultural connection with regards to the legend of St George but i did not have any clear or precise data...

...mamikon noted that..
Georgia in Georgian language is called Saakartvelo not Georgia. I don't know why its called Georgia in English

....therein lies another question?...maybe here is where the red cross flag comes into the equation?...possibly the flag was there first and the western name for Saakartvelo developed because of that?....thank you for you reply mamikon, i am now much more aware than i was before and the information has given me something more to think about....

Ancient greeks called us Georgians coz it meant People aware of rural activities......others believed the name was give because of lots of Churches of st.George in georgia where erected...(Even georgian idolaters beleived in St.George)

As for the flag with five red crosses, Georgian army leading this flag destroyed Seljuks in 1121, since then GEorgia leaded several crusades....since 12th century this flag has been emblem of Georgian Orthox church as well..

Abkhazian military captured several of georgian students in Gali region (Abkhazia) the are holding them in captivity in Sukhumi, they were attanding demonstrations in Gali, coz as you know this region is sattled by ethnic georgians and the situation is precisely tense here, abkhaz forces arrest georgians living there and making them join the army, nobody stops bandits who rush into homes and kidnap poeple, so many times i watched news where georgians telling that Russian post 300 m away had no reaction about any thefts and kidnappings....all week i hear smb was kidnapped and bandits were demanding 20 000 dolars or so for his release...

Nowadays, georgia has a control over the small part of abkhazia (Kodori gorge) which is the shortest way to Sukhumi, tactically best way to capture the city (I'm against of war as most georgians, enaugh with blood we shedded with abkhazians too......if no russian support special forces will steal Abkhaz president from their sight)

...thank you for the information Datuna...i had heard about the tense situation in the Gali region and also about Georgian visitors to the Kodori Gorge region, which seemed to inflame the aggression still further....

..my son's grandmother lives in Sukhmi and although we know she is reasonably safe, and although she insists all is ok, we still worry about what is going on, personally, i do have a bad feeling that the conflict will erupt again, maybe not on the scale it did in the war, but i believe events will possibly get worse......

..i appreciate your response Datuna...thank you....lets hope for all Abkhazian's and Georgian's that things can get better (my son's grandfather was Georgian so we have in my family here in England a realistic view of what is going on....)...

The flag is/was used by the Duchy of Moscow, Genoa, Catalonia, and then some.
A very popular guy it seems.
