Mehmed Siyah Qalem paintings and works from the Siyah Qalem school of painters have recently been shown in quite a few exhibitions in Europe. The collection is from the Topkapi Palace Library and also some European and Russian collectors. He was a Turkmen artist and his works are very original and pretty interesting, I havn't seen anything like it they're quite unique. Here are some examples.

Turkmen falconer

14 century art of Mehmed Siyah kalem depicting hunting scene of Central Asia

Two bound demons

14 century art of Mehmed Siyah kalem depicting an eagle totem sign for a Turkish tribe

His paintings seem to be a synthesis between eastern and western art.

hmm it's more like mix of  East asian(chinese, japanese) and West asian Turkish , persian) Miniature.

Spme of them look pure in the style of Lets say Herat(because the style of Herat was seen as the perfect from of Miniature by the Turks & persians)

some of the look realy chinese

I wish I could give some examples but why can't I upload anymore?

Could his name be an artistic signature, like a pen name, and not his real name. I think it literally means black pen. It looks more oriental than western like Xi noted.

The problem is that the artist never left there name on the miniature.(it was seen .....well I don't know why but it was a big no no)

The goal of the Miniaturist was to perfectly copy the Masters of the Past "the real masters"

If a artist showed any trait of  style of his own.Than he was unworthy and a failure(weird if you come to think of it)

The goal was to not let know if the painting was made to day or 100 years ago. People should not know who made it.

So a signature was out of the question( At least in persian & turkish miniature)

Normaly there should be no name on the miniature.

But I don't know from wich periode these paintings come.

I allso heard that the "new generation" was becomming "cocky" and started to sighn Shocked the paintings or integrating there own style into it.

Xi_Tujue, Mehmed Siyah Qalem wasn't really a "miniaturist" in the traditional sense. These works are pretty original and neither look similar nor have the same themes and style's commongly seen in "miniatures".

What is known is that there was a "Mehmed Siyah Qalem" but little is known about him. Also there was a school which later started specialising in this style he had created.

These theme's are very striking, he's drawing Djin's, animals, wildlife etc it seem's like a courtly account of the visions of nomadic, semi-nomadic people's. I think he did sign his work but I;m not entirely sure, although it was instantly known to be his because nothing looked remotely similar.
