It was probably geography that eventually caused the drift. And then each started blending with the cultures that they moved closer to. I think around 3000 B.C. they were almost identical. "Proto-Sanskri/Avestant" or whatever you want to call it split into Avestan and Sanscrit with minor differences and in 500 BC Panini overhauled Sanskrit and added a few external[dravidian] words.

I find this type of single line "new postings" asking details from the readers, then discussion drifting, digressing, deviatng to different topics.

 
Why can't the posting authors ask specifically theitr clarfication, doubt or interpretation, so that one can directly proceed from there.
 
Evidently, the question depends upon the title and pre-conceived and therefore, unless he comes out with eaxctaly what he wants to know about the so-called "old-Indic" and "Old-Iranic".
 
H. S. Spencer and others have dealt with elaborately.
History is not what was written or is written, but it is actually what had happened in the past.
