our university had a team in Dunhuang . Yesterday they come back. there was a party. As the chairperson of the HOng Kong Society of Native American Studies, i was invited.I stated that it was Muslim invasion, so Buddhists opened caves in the mountain to hide their, arts, pictures, doucements. But the professor stated that Buddhists opened the caves for religious practice.I sated that Buddhists did not carry out religious practice in such caves. She asked me to read the doucements of the Buddhism

Who was right? Why Buddhist copen such caves?

hello,

well your theory make sence, but you have to know, that there are similar caves like Dunhuang, even if there was a invasion, they can t all be used for their valuables, right? and there wer indication that the statues and the paintings were actually created in the cave, so even if there was a muslim invasion, all the evidence are pointing at religions practice site.

Those caves were the trails of the spread of Buddhism from XIYU( west terrain) to the Middle Kingdom.  It was started from the Han era when the Silk road explored and trade prosperous. Bussiness men afforded monks to carve those sculptures for the worshipping activities.  Out of the Jade Gate, environment got so harsh and dangerous, huge mountains thwarted before the road,  incalculable desert ready to devour every life passing it, the ferocious Hun raiding here and there. Here, the worst part of the silk road, without the protection of the Great Wall and garrisons, the only psychologic relying on for those poor souls was religious. The caves were the result of millenary practice of religion. It is nothing to do with Islam invasion I believe, simply coz there were no Islam at all untill 6 th century when the caves had already been stagerring in its scale and delication.
