I love the Sex Pistols. Thanks to the documentary, "The Filth and the Fury," I learned that the Sex Pistols were as manufactured as the Back Street Boys. The main difference is that they were such bad musicians that no one couldn't believe that they weren't for real.
I loved how the documentary explained that the only reason why Anarchy got connected to Punk music was because these dopes couldn't find a way to rhyme "Antichrist." They settled for "Anarchist", changing the ending syllable from a /kist/ sound to a /kaist/ to force the rhyme with "christ". This failure in their talents fueled a whole bunch of politics making punk the music for the politically inclined. Think of folk-protest music with no talent singers and players and loud
Yet, the bumbling idiots that formed the Sex Pistols swallowed their pride, went ahead and performed, and were able to turned their raw angst and anger into an honest expression of nihilism.
They are so id. They can barely express their frustrations. They cling to the most repulsive iconography, lyrics, and musical style.
My favorite song is God Save the Queen. It is beautiful in so many ways. I love the horrible political timing of writing an insulting song to the Queen during her jubilee. But what I like the most is how well the bad, loud music express the lines, No future for you in some kind of a mad, tribal chant.
The Sex Pistols are primal, and that is what makes them good. Simple beats, simple guitars, and lots of emotion.
