628 - Death of Empress Suiko in Japan (attributed to a total eclipse). Suiko was the daughter of Emperor Kimmei and at 18 became the empress-consort of Emperor Bidatsu, who reigned 572-585. Suiko's brother, Emperor Sujun or Sushu, reigned next, but was murdered. Suiko was convinced to take the throne, with the son of another chieftain acting as regent who actually administered government. Suiko reigned as Empress for 30 years. Crown Prince Shotoku was regent or prime minister for 30 years. Empress Suiko is credited with ordering the promotion of Buddhism beginning in 596. It was also during Suiko's reign that China first diplomatically recognized Japan, and Chinese influence increased.

1903 - Clare Boothe Luce is born. Socialite Clare Boothe Luce, married to Henry R. Luce who published Time, Life and Fortune magazines, served in the U.S. Congress from 1942 to 1946 and later was ambassador to Brazil and Italy. She also wrote plays, was a World War II war correspondent, and wrote articles and reviews. She was noted for her quips and wit.

Clare Boothe Luce
1930 - Dolores Huerta is born. Ms. Huerta was co-founder of the United Farm Workers, labor leader and organizer, social activist and was born in New Mexido. Her parents divorced when she was very young and she was raised by her mother in Stockton, California, with the active help of her grandfather, Herculano Chavez. Ms. Huerta became involved in a community group supporting farm workers which merged with the AFL-CIO's Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC). She served as secrtary-treasurer of the AWOC. It was during this time that she met Cesar Chavez, and then formed with him the Farm Workers Association, which eventually became the United Farm Workers (UFW).
