Topic: Orasje, never forget Posted: 13-Feb-2006 at 14:16 |
ORASJE never forget
Orasje
is a predominantly Roman Catholic town located right on the border
between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. During the war it was
sandwiched between the Republic of Serb Krajina, established in
Croatia, and the Serb Republic, established in Bosnia.
Here is
photo of a Roman Catholic chapel on the outskirts of the town, taken
sometime before the 1992-1995 war. The chapel was built in 1987 as a
memorial to the son of a wealthy family who was killed in a car
accident at the location.
Here is
photo of the same Roman Catholic chapel, rebuilt after the war. The
scariest part is that Roman Catholics in the area made up the smallest
percentage of Orasje's death toll, surpassed by both Serbs and Bosniaks.

It's a nice, photographic way to make the point - and Roman Catholics,
at an estimated 5 per cent of the death toll in the overall war in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, are not often remembered properly.
So, voila, this thread.

Orasje municipality is predominantly Croat, overwhelming today. Odzak
and Orasje have always been mainly Croat towns, at least since I was
born.

war some 70% of town population was Bosniak.County Odzak and Orasje
with villages was predominantly Croat. But if you want just information

I checked, you're right about Orasje:
In the 1991 census the municipality of Oraje had 28,211 residents, of which 75.27% Croats, 14.96% Serbs, 6.77% Bosniaks, 2.15% Yugoslavs and 0.86% others.
The town of Oraje itself had 3,901 inhabitants: 47% Bosniaks, 23% Serbs, 15% Croats, 12% Yugoslavs and 3% others.
Still strange to me, I've only ever seen one mosque there.
