I also think that even if we take the battle of Tours away from Charles Martel, the simple fact that he was involved in a series of Wars from 714 to 737, and at his death, he had lost only 1 battle.

He should at least be somewhere in the "top 10".

perhaps his name could be included in the top 100 but not in the top 10 in my opinion.
Subodai the Mongol,Philip II of Macedon, Belisarius,Rommel,Frederick II of Prussia,Eugene of Savoy,Tamerlane,Attila the Hun, Saladin,
there are so many great generals

Fair enough.

i made a mistake because of my bad english i tried to say extreme catholic.

The_oz, calling Poland an 'extreme catholic' country is like calling Turkey an extreme islamic country. Both statements are wrong. If you want, we can talk about it in another thread - but not here.

Anyone who believes that Julius Caeser was not that great a general is ignorant. He was highly innovative and his tactics were more dynamic than either Napoleon or Rommel. And I agree with the suggestion that Scipio Africanus should be on the list - the guy was a genius.

Though you point maybe valid, it would be helpful if you would clarify it by giving your assessment as to why this should be looked at as being so. Btw, welcome to the forum.
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

The fact that Robert E Lee only got a couple of mentions in this entire thread proves the idea that 'History is written by the victors'.  Stonewall Jackson is victim to this as well to a lesser degree.

Or it shows that on an overall view of history, neither gens. mentioned, aren't worthy of much more than a mention.

But, for the moment, I'll focus on the ACW, being a fair general, facing a bunch of poor ones, doesn't make you a great one.  Just better than your opponents.

And with opponents like Ambrose Burnside,  That's not much of a jump. Big smile

Sun Tzu, 544–496 BC- the Chinese General and Philosopher wrote "The Art of War" a book studied all over the world still. His writings point to the most common sense points of War, and he must rank as the greatest ever.

Thanks for being fair? Your assessments of the South's leadership really stinks! You are using your rank to lead the team for someone else that you regard!

Lee and Jackson were mostly undefeatable until Jackson's death! In almost ever battle the Union troop were in a two to one advantage, yet you disparage on both sides!

And this war was basically ignored in Europe and Asia, etc.!

Ashamed you should be, RedClay

Is there any "real" proof that he ever lived or led?

And all of them (the American Civil war generals) were trained at the same Academy! This must mean something?
