In some books, the Battle of Malplaquet is considered a french defeat in others it is a french victory. However I do consider the battle of Malplaquet as a tactical defeat for the french army(since the french army left the battlefield for the allies to claim victory) but it is a strategic victory. Considering the allies suffered more casualties and were not capable to follow their plan invasion of Paris after that. What is your analysis on this battle and its outcome?
Well, basically the same as yours. Marlborough won the battle but he failed to maintain control of the fighting on many fronts and he also horribly underestimated the fighting efficiency of the French army. The result, in my opinion, was only a hair's breadth away from what can be called a Pyrrhic victory.
