Topic: What if Soviets werent seperated? Posted: 17-Jun-2005 at 11:22 |
What would be our world like today, if Soviet Union was still surviving and strong, as the balancer power of US? Would there happen any American invasions to Iraq, the terrorist action in 11th September, etc.?

There was no way the Soviet Union could have continued to survive as a
balancer of power with the United States. They just could not have kept
up with the United States econimically. If they were to have a
conitnued existence, it would have been as a hegemon, not a comparable
superpower with the United States. There was no way that they would
have kept all of their territories with all that nationalistic fervor.
I imagine a continued Soviet Empire to be the size of today's Russian
Federation, perhaps a little bigger.
A continued Soviet prescence in the east would have actively opposed
the Iraq invasion, as Iraq was a source of their weapon sales. They
would have probably opposed it just to spite the United States as well.
As for the terrorist bombings, I do not think the Soviet Union would
have supported it, but a sound reason why escapes me.

Soviet Union would have been a hollow shell. An economy that is
dysfunctional while trying to keep a semblance of being a
superpower.

I would like to say one thing, there is a general misconception on the soviet military everywhere, but the technology of some of the arments they had when they broke up havent been matched yet, and they still have a potential army of 24-25 million soldiers.. The military industry is still producing and researching modern weaponary.. yes their economics was and still is terrible, and ten years ago going to jail was better than going to the army.. but that all over and its normalizing..
So there isnt an if.. it still possible

The truth is that 20 years ago Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact were able to take Europe within a week and the only way to stop them was nuclear weapon.

Well yes, the basis of Western defense planning was based around nuclear weapons. Eisenhower surrendered superiority in conventional forces so as to make it clear that any Soviet attack would recieve a nuclear response.
