The following is from Pope Francis I's message as he marked his name day, the Feast of St. George, celebrating Mass in the Pauline Chapel in 2013:
But the Christian identity is not an identity card. Christian identity is belonging to the Church, because all of these belonged to the Church, the Mother Church.

Please explain about "the Christian church is not an identity card".

An Identity Card is personal to the individual. It belongs to you and you can take it anywhere to prove who you are. It gives you autonomy and freedom of movement.

The Pope, however, is saying that being a 'Christian' is not a personal identity that belongs to the individual, and you can not go off anywhere and prove you are a Christian just by saying you are. According to the Pope, being a Christian is reliant on being part of the Catholic Church. It is not an individual possession that is validated by the person carrying it, but is an identity bestowed by the Church only upon individuals who submit their individual autonomy and freedom to the dictates of the Catholic Church of Rome.
