In 1085 King William I of England commissioned a comprehensive survey of his new realm.
It became known as the Domesday Book because it was regarded as the final authority against which there is no appeal.
King William's purpose was to assess how much tax he could extract from every town, village and hamlet.
The survey was also intended to establish who owned what.

The Domesday Book was written in Medieval Latin and included some vernacular terms without Latin equivalents.
The name Domesday Book came into use in the 12th century.
