During the First World War, Luxembourg was technically neutral, but was invaded and occupied by German troops in 1914.
Suppose Luxembourg is not neutral.
Should Luxembourg be on the Central Powers side or the Allies side?
'Should' is the wrong word. But on a personal feeling, considering that Germany broke their treaty I would like to think Luxembourg would support the Allied.
The London Treaty of 1867 aside..it made eminent strategic sense for the Germans to do exactly what they did before the French could pull a reverse Schlieffen plan. Tho given the force structure and strat adoption of line fortifications and defensive mindset of the time that was highly improbable.
That it was watered down by Moltke has been a subsequent topic of discussion ref the failure initially of the original strat intent and the collapse into trench fighting....for decades.
The fact that the Army of the Grand Duchess was more a palace guard then an actual force majeure ..sealed the fate.
There was no ability for the country to have been a viable ally other than in a simpatico relationship for morale purposes.
And had they done.... so the German occupation could have been even more severe than it actually was.
