Matilda of Boulogne, Queen Consort of King Stephen of England (reigned 1135-1141), supported the order of Templars, who protected and financed the crusaders.      
Providing for the Crusades was an active form of piety that appealed to Queen Matilda's dauntless and decisive nature.

Not surprising, considering that her uncle Godfrey had been Protector of the Holy Sepulchre, and another uncle, Baldwin, had been king of Jerusalem.

Indeed, the Latin church were even more keen to use Crusader vigour to crush their schismatic Orthodox Xian brethren in the East - than to pursue infidel adherents of Islam..
