On January 28, 1547 Edward VI became King of England.
King Henry VIII had stipulated in his will the creation of a ruling regency council.
Edward's uncle, Edward Seymour, Earl of Hartford had been able to delay public announcement of King Henry's demise for three days until January 31.
Edward Seymour was declared Lord Protector. He broke up the council of regents and assumed sole power.
On February 16, 1547 he was named Duke of Somerset.

The vanity of titles assigned by royals has always amused me.

Amen.
