On May 28, 1804, the day that the Senate proclaimed the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte to be "Emperor of the French Republic", a state banquet was held at St. Cloud.
Why was Republic included in the title if Napoleon intended to be Emperor?
Was Napoleon the originator of the title "Emperor of the French Republic"?

Napoleon had been First Consul of the French Republic. He became Emperor of the French. He is erroneously called Emperor of the French Republic by many writers. He was not styled as such.
