It is sometimes believed that before the 20th century, except Iranians themselves, other peoples used different names for Iran, one of the major names was Persia which was mostly used by the westerners, there were some other names too, for example Arabs prefered to call this country bilad al-Ajam which meant "land of foreigners" in Arabic.

But it is interesting to mention that there are several sources from the Ottoman archives which show Ottoman Turks also used the name of Iran, some of them have been mentioned here: http://darvakebaran.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/blog-post_25.html

This is an Ottoman map of Iran from 1142 Hijri (1730 AD):

Or this is an Ottoman letter from 1886 AD:

It is a question which  I have never thought, but I think the name Ajam(Acem) is more old and common in Ottoman History

That's why, Atatürk used word "Acem" instead of Iranian
The last word of tenth line from bottom is "acemlerin"

but same person also banned this name in December 1923, before the Iranian Shah's official wish to using word Iran instead of other names(1935)

Iran-Turkey relations in Atatürk Period (Turkish)

In conclusion, using word Iran by Ottomans was a suprise for me

BTW Ajam(Acem) has a great sound in Turkish, it is so gentle and soft for me and there is not any negative meanings. Ajam, Rum and Arab are three parts of historical islamic word.

The history tells everything.. but just wondering how do they come with such idealistic branding name.. like for the country of Iran, how they came up with something unique and how this name pertains to. Nowadays, if you think of brand naming, you must have to try asking expert or refer to some valuable resources just as this http://eatmywords.com/tips/is-your-name-lame/.
