One of the weirdest railways was the 18ft gauge electric "daddy long legs" installed at Brighton in 1896. The rails were underwater and the passenger car was raised above the waterline on stilts. Touted as a "sea voyage on rails," it remained operational until 1901 when it was removed to allow construction of a tidal barrier
and at no point as it was being conceived did anyone say to the developers, "the same effect can be achieved for a fraction of the cost if you buy a small pleasure boat"
Stupidity got us into this mess, why can't it get us out?
