As mods, can we make sure we lock threads in the technical support section once the problem has been resolved? I plan to make life as difficult as possible for unregistered spambots

I already do this when I see they have been used by a spammer. As a pre-emptive measure I would do it to all of them but there are thousands and I dont have the time. Better to eliminate entire sub's and create new replacements or en masse deliever them into archive status.

I"m confused, what is 'solved' mean? Just really, really old threads with
no activity in years?

That's right TJ: long-dead threads (over a year old) revived by unregistered spammers

I might point out that there is no such thing as an "obsolete thread".  People frequently join and then sort through the older posts.  Nick, you yourself go through and resurrect threads.  If we start locking threads just because a spammer settled in there once or twice, we won't have much left, and we'll still have spammers.

Red, I just wanted to put a stop to all the unregistered spambots who come here and crap on our forum by posting their junk in this section. See this link as an example: i report a (now banned) spammer but shortly afterwards three other unregistered bots advertise knock-off sneakers, handbags and hair straighteners:

I fully understand what your trying to do, and I agree with and support you 100%.  I know spam is a pain in the ear, and this is small consolation but there was a time when it was considerably worse.  I use to spend an hour every morning deleting dozens of spam posts.  The answer to most of it is to do away with the guest slot.
My main point is that locking threads is giving in to the spammers.  If we start that, the spammers will find another way and we end up with little to attract real members.

I agree Red, but we still need an unregistered section for members who have lost their passwords. I think the technical support forum is OK as it is, but it must be the only place where "guests" can post

Isn't most of the spam on the sections reserved for members any way?
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

Every legitimate case of lost passwords that I'm aware of has been solved by the person re-joining with a temp. ident. and posting.  To my thinking, the Guest slot has outlived it's usefulness.  There are some forums now that won't even let you read unless you join.

Personaly, I think we should start "counter spamming".  Every spammer has an address for whatever their spamming.  How about an organized effort to jam the address of the sales outfit with bogus spams, or better yet, with spam advertising AE.  Does anyone think that would get their attention?

I'll have to check Stopforumspam and see if anyone has done that.

I had to use the "Forgot my Password" function to restore my account earlier this evening. I used to have it on auto see, and then the computer broke ... anyway, I think Red is right, and the guest slot is only an encouragement to spam. Locking old topics does seem like an extreme measure to me though, especially in any of the history based sections of the site ... I recommend dealing with each case separately unless it becomes an intolerable problem for the mod team.

Nice to see TJ is a mod too. Well done to him.
