During the Middle Ages, certain types of animal were reserved for the king. Elizabeth I passed a law prohibiting the consumption of swans by the lower orders, which is still in force today. Every year the Vinters and Dyers of London exercise their right to mark white swans as their property, although these days they are no longer eaten

Swans are protected from being hunted, or their eggs taken, under the Wild Creatures and Forest Law Act of 1971. Eating swan is not illegal, but the intentional killing of them is. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, anyone found guilty of attacking swans can be sentenced to six months in prison and fined £5,000.

The queen only owns certain swans in specific circumstances (ie mute swans on certain parts of the Thames or in 'wild water', and only ones that are not marked as the property of some one else - hence the continuing tradition of swan-upping, where the Vinters and Dyers mark their swans each year, and so distinguishing them from the queens).

Last year 43 mute swans were illegally killed on Sedgemoor. I worked at the Animal Rescue Centre that dealt with the casualties. Terry Pratchett (author of the DiscWorld novels), among others, contributed to over a £25,000 reward for capturing the culprits. The RSPCA were left by the police to investigate the incidents, and as far as I know the Queen took no interest in the incident whatsoever. This seemed irritatingly strange considering how much an important symbol they are. Three men were eventually arrested, but are still awaiting prosecution.

I hope they catch the people responsible. There was a rumor recently that Polish immigrants were eating the swans as it's not illegal to do so over there

Lampreys were the favorite food of Henry I. As a result of their popularity these ocean-going parasites became a scarce luxury restricted to the nobility

Didn't Henry I die from a surfeit of lampreys? I assume he over ate on them, as opposed to being buried under a pile of them.

I also thought he died of overeating. Lamprey pie was served to Elizabeth II after her coronation using fish imported from Canada

King John loved lampreys so much he passed a law prohibiting their capture in Gloucestershire. Here's a Tudor recipe for lamprey pie:

The king's cook had a manor at Gloucester for the sole purpose of acquiring lampreys. The city was required by law to send a regular supply to the king whenever he was in the area

Another law passed during the reign of Edward II made whales and sturgeon royal fish. Anyone who found a beached whale was required to give its head to the king and the tail to the queen. Whale oil was a valuable source of fuel, blubber was a rare delicacy, and whalebone was used to make womens corsets

Not in Scotland. James VI tried to ban smoking as he believed it was a health hazard

Sturgeons were also reserved for the king's use as they contained caviar. Anyone who found a dead "royal fish" was required to present it to the Receiver of Wreck
