Disney Says 'John Carter' to Lose $200 Million
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- "John Carter" is now officially a flop of galactic proportions.

The Walt Disney Co. said Monday that it expects to book a loss of $200 million on the movie in the quarter through March.

"In light of the theatrical performance of John Carter ($184 million global box office), we expect the film to generate an operating loss of approximately $200 million during our second fiscal quarter ending March 31.

Ooops. I bet someone loses their job on this one.

Shame... it's a great story and a great character. Some piss ant casting agent needs to go as I wasn't thrilled with who was in it to begin with. Nor from reviews, do they do justice to the original. Adaptations rarely do.

I'll wait for the video release....should be next week according to the reviews.

Hopefully I will get to see it on DVD then. If memory serves me right Waterworld was a disaster to when released, but then made its money back from video sales. The Shawshank Redemption, which is considered to be one of the most popular films, or at least has been, totally flopped at the movies.
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

I had never heard of the character before, but, as with most movies who suffer this
sort of cinema tripping, it will recoup some of its losses in rentals or rights sold to
cable/Netflix, etc.

The trailers looked good, despite the similarities to Avatar. It's just a pity they're releasing other sci-fi movies this year, like Prometheus and Star Trek

Never heard of the stories too. First trailer looked dreadful, all set on earth, all talk and barely a glimpse of the aliens. Leaves you wondering if a trailer alone can destroy a movie's chances. Second trailer every scene from the first is gone, they make it look like an action movie, only the CGI is dreadful, the dialogue cringeworthy and some of the shots they use poor suggesting they were straining to find enough decent shots for the trailer.
Stupidity got us into this mess, why can't it get us out?

Are we talking of the John Carter from the Edgar Rice Burroughs famous " Mars " series of books ?

I lapped these up as a teenager, along with the Gregory Sallust novels written by Dennis Wheatley. They were both hugely fascinating and distracting from the burdens of Latin, trigonometry and the Officer Cadet Force at school.   Oddly enough I have recently been thinking of revisiting these books, and now, Lo ! Disney would appear to be making a cinematic production of one of them !    Mind you, any halfwit could have told them that they were doomed to failure, because why should any kid who can access unlimited porn on his mobile phone or iPad, be quite as turned on as I was by Burroughs shapely and wanton heroines in their black leather bikinis !

MY GOD! My senses are assaulted by dementia! That is the dementia of a few of the respondents to this post.

Egads, these young people have never heard of "John Carter of Virginia and Mars"? Have no young people ever heard of the author of this great hero/character? The Martian (Barsoom) chronicles are amongst the best writings of this great author, as was his series concerning Tarzan and submarines.

At least Marlin47 knows about them! Thanks!

It is best that I die soon!!
