I agree. I was recently in a argument concerning the protests at UC Berkeley. A protester was complaining that the police 'knocked the wind out of him', when they pushed the crowd back. I compared it to the 3,500 + people that have apparently been killed in Syria and called this breed of smelly college kids a bunch of whiny children by comparison.

I see your point and comparison between the two Cyrus.
In theory, I support what the protesters (US) are trying to say about "occupy ____" But where I diverge with the mobocracy is their direction. They have all this youthful cloud dreams of change for change sake and are not presenting themselves as organized. Just seemingly a bunch of kids rebelling against those who have. If they used a more democratic approach in their organization, then more people, I feel, would support them. But, they are mostly seen as kids not protesting by the rules of protesting and just asking for trouble. If asked by police, even campus police, to stop blocking this or that, and I refuse, then what would I expect back in return? The US protesters haven't experienced water cannons or baton wielding authorities on a deadly scale. Protest all they want, but have a platform to get your message out and stop coming across as kids acting spoiled.

In truth, those kids should have moved when told. As I have said before, if you want to play games, you should be prepared for people to play back, and a little bit of pepper spray is far better than a baton, rubber bullet, or live round to the cranium.
It is obvious that there is some ridiculously political posturing that has these officers in any form of trouble. Since bad PR is more important than maintaining order, I prescribe an immediate disbandment of all law-enforcement agencies.

It pisses me off so much that police cannot do their jobs, always worrying about how they will be sold down the river by politicians because of feigned outrage over some stupid youtube video. That's why I made that tongue in cheek statement.....if you won't let them do their job, then disband them.
Deep down though TJ, I know you wouldn't mind a little justice ala Roy Bean.

Anyone who thinks pepper spray is a lot of fun needs to take a good 3 second burst in the chops. I'm a little set back by the comments. Civil disobedience has been at the root of our political process since the founding of our country.
No those protesters have not been clubbed or have had a fire hose turned on them. Does that have to happen to make this a real protest?
I don't know about UC Davis, but the protesters in Phila. are about 50% folks in their 50's and 60's.
Not fuzzy faced kids, but folks who are losing or have lost everything they have worked for.
The more people of my age become involved, the more dangerous it will become. I have been clubbed, teargassed, had dogs turned on me, no water cannon though. There are quite a few of us with that experience behind us. After dealing with fat head southern sheriffs, this is kind of tame.
The danger is that it will grow. It's easy to sit back and criticize the protesters at this stage. What happens if older citizens with organizational skills move in?
How many of those who are criticizing the protesters unemployed? How many are still in school?
How many of you have watched as everything you have worked for over 50 years or so go down the toilet?
How many of you are getting your info from open and unbiased sources such as FOX news.

Sorry Red Clay, but I have been subjected to both tear-gas and pepper spray, and have seen first hand what a rubber bullet does to the human body. While the spray was miserable, I would much rather be subjected to it than any form of hard projectile.
As to the protestors, the protests in California are inundated with:
1- whiny college kids
2-hard-core socialists
3-anarchists
4-drug-addled homeless
At the Occupy protest in my home town, a truck pulled up and passed out placards to the people in the crowd, all premade, and all displaying the Soviet red fist....and the people protesting? Middle-class wannabes who want to relive the 60s, accompanied by the idealistic know-it-alls from the local high school.
I am sorry, but the original message, which has some validity to it, has been co-opted into something much different.

Oh, you are so close. I'm all for the rights of Americans to protest in an orderly manner, all with permits, platforms and organization. They can have a million person rally full of nice warm fist pumping speeches for months on end, just do it all legally. But, when someone or a group thinks because they are some bohemian net-cafe blogger, that they can trump the law, then they need a crash course in civics. Warn them, one them again and they don't adhere, then, it becomes the hard hand of education. They are doing nothing and accomplishing even less with their present tactics. Hopefully someone in that mob has read a history book and see how peaceful protest can lead to more dramatic change than whining. See Dr. King or Gandhi.
