Quran Chapter 5

27. And relate to them the true story of Adam's two sons: when they offered an offering, and it was accepted from one of them, but it was not accepted from the other. He Said, "I will kill you." He Said, "God accepts only from the righteous."

28. "If you extend your hand to kill me, I will not extend my hand to kill you; for I fear God, Lord of the Worlds."

29. "I would rather you bear my sin and your sin, and you become among the inmates of the Fire. Such is the reward for the evildoers."

30. Then His soul prompted him to kill his brother, so he killed him, and became one of the losers.

31. Then God sent a raven digging the ground, to show him how to cover his brother's corpse. He said, "Woe to me! I was unable to be like this raven, and bury my brother's corpse." So he became full of regrets.

32. Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel: that whoever kills a person-unless it is for murder or corruption on earth-it is as if he killed the whole of mankind; and whoever saves it, it is as if he saved the whole of mankind. Our messengers came to them with clarifications, but even after that, many of them continue to commit excesses in the land.

And as importantly for me...why did his offering get rejected? The usual answer is it was based on faith iow. Cain used his reason and not faith. Who in the hell determined that?Confused

By far the most pressing question is where Cain's wife came from?  Adam and Eve - first couple.  Two sons. Cains slays Able and travels to another land where he takes a wife.  Wacko

Oops!  How did that work out, given that Adam and Eve were the first?  I do beleive some serious explanations are in order, and I don't mean about the snake.  Ermm

Often the term Shepard is used as a metaphor as someone who is worthy to lead. Also in ancient history those growing crops tend to be the followers of the hierarchy, and not the hierarchy themselves.
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.

I think the story is legendary, but a ver deep philosophical one, exposing the deep fratricidal tendencies we humans have - after all all wars are nothing but Cain and Abel again and again. There is a wisdom in the Bible that is based on understanding of the human nature as nature is, not about one particular event, but abaout the nature all all events that happen to humanity. At least this is my take on it.

The facts of the story still do not explain WHY God chose Abel's offering over that of Cain.

Abel was the first to kill an animal and spill blood. God had told Adam he had dominion over the animals, but never the power to take their lives. It was Cain who was following God's commandents to Adam to till the soil and eat the plants of the field. God seems to have ignored this point.

It is usually assumed that Cain performed the sacrifice in the wrong frame of mind, or had a bad character, although that is not really made clear in the story. It is only after the fact that he grew annoyed that his sacrifice was refused is it mentioned that he was unrighteous in thought.

Seems a tad unfair.

the Story of ABEL & CAIN is such a genuine fact and there is no  need for any blasphematory remarks , both the Holy Quran & the Bible are adamant about the reasons behind the First murder on Earth , the Holy Quran in such rhetoric manner recalls the facts:

"And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him]. (27)If you should raise your hand against me to kill me - I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds. (28)Indeed I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers." (29)And his soul permitted to him the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers. (30)Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful. (31)Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors. (32)

Why did God choose Abel's offering over Cain's? It would seem to me that farming is a much more labor-intensive activity than watching some sheep in a field, which would also mean that Cain put in actual effort for his offering.
