In a source*(wikipedia) it is said that Christopher Columbus sailed for the reason of Spain hiring and Spain wanting a safer trade route to Asia. How exactly was the situation back then economically for the entire "world" (old world)

Most competent teachers (quite rightly) view wikipedia with contempt and will mark down any essay that uses it as a source. It's fine for looking up facts but is as useless as the facts churned out by the education system. As a historian you must always question these assumptions and look for facts to back them up. In this case, searching for a trade route was definitely a factor, but so was religious fanaticism (desire to convert heathen of the east) and financial gain (desire to bring back treasure or slaves)

The first link is the most important as it contains Columbus' original letters. These provide insight into his personal views and interactions with his fellow-explorers and patrons

Amen my brother amen.

In addition to base facts and those might also be necessarily verified; it's only positive feature, depending on the author of an article, is that it will assist in locating sources and references that are normally germane to the subject matter. And which are in a classic sense better and more crediible sources.
