During WWI, Germany was an empire composed of a variety of states including kingdoms. Anyways, several German crown princes, Grand Dukes etc. followed the medieval custom and served as army commanders. One of those was Crown Prince Weilhelm who led the German 5th Army at Verdun. In addition, Tsar Nicholas, though not an army commander
per se, was heavily involved in the day to day leadership and military planning activities of Russian armies in the field.
