Ambras Castle

Ambras Castle is situated outside of Innsbruck, Austria.
When Archduke Ferdinand, the second son of Emperor Ferdinand I, was made sovereign of the Tyrol in 1563, he had two Italian architects to turn the existing medieval fortress into a Renaissance castle for his wife Philippine.
The Spanish Hall was built between 1569 to 1572. The long hall is dominated by the 27 full-length portraits of the princely rulers of the Tyrol.

Castle Hedingham

Castle Hedingham is in England. Its vast stone tower was built in approximately 1140 by Aubrey de Vere III, probably to celebrate his elevation to the earldom of Oxford.
Castle Hedingham once had four corner turrets and a forebuilding on the west face containing the first-floor entrance to the tower.
The castle remained in the de Vere family until 1703, on the demise of the 20th Earl of Oxford.

I think that the modern day accepted usage of the word "castle" or "castel", has changed modern thinking. Perhaps one should consider the ancient game of "chess", where the "castel" was once merely the hightest and most defendable part of a ship, and later turned into the now common "high castle!"

Please read; http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/98667/castle

I feel that today, too many consider Walt Disney's castle as more appropriate!

But, perhaps, as in so many things, I am wrong?

Regards,

Some of you might well not consider this place as the home to a great castle, but I do so consider;

Perhaps some of you did not know these facts;

While I am computer stupid, I would like to show you all this site and other information concerning it. If any of you are capable, I would appreciate it if one of you could actually post the colour examples like those above.

http://historic-cities.huji.ac.il/switzerland/sion/maps/braun_hogenberg_I_37.html

Just look at the high-resolution view and read the Latin of the day!

A little look at the history of this town, which still exists in a remarkable similar condition today, and you will find out that it was a “see” or “seat” of a Bishopric, and its name today is Sion /or Zion, and on the representation, one mount is called “Sitten!” Could one assume that at one time the words “Sion” or “Zion” might also have merely or even “importantly?” described the “seat of a Bishop?”, even the “Bishop of Rome?” Certainly “Sitten” does so!

You might even want to view this version?

http://historic-cities.huji.ac.il/switzerland/sion/maps/munster_lat_1550_338.html

Oh, by the way there are modern colour versions of the same available.

This site might well be the most unusual set of remains found within all of Europe.
