I just came across some interesting stuff on another forum

So, acording with this, the romans doesnt stop in march across Germania bewten Rhine and Elba whenever they see necesary (long after Germanicus campagnes against Arminius), and even in III century AD, when the empire was clearly in a big decline they was able to control the area, march up to north of Germany and defeat the german forces who try to stop them. I think if romans wasnt such "eated" from the inside by their own problems (endless civil wars and battles for power, endemic corruption and gradualy fall of economy and martial views of citizens) they will last much more, up to medieval times at least (as a united empire in east and west), since even in the bad condition it was in III century, they was still "in charge" both in Europe and Orient.
