 Before
the Vikings’ invasions, England
was never ruled by a single person, and by 877, only few remainders of Wessex
remained.  In 878, King Alfred
of the West Saxons defeated Guthrun the Dane in
Edington.  After Alfred’s
victory, a new institution was established: a system of defense.  Alfred’s system
allowed his rules to reach other Anglo-Saxons. 
Soon his rule and law superceded that of custom’s rule.  He also founded the base to a new system that
created local government that would be responsible under the king.  Swen
 Forkbeard, a Danish ruler, attacked England;
Canute, the son of Forkbeard, completed the attack
against the Anglo-Saxons.  Canute
became the king of England
and Norway.  His main policy was to enforce assimilation
between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons.  Edward
the Confessor, son of Anglo-Saxon man and a Norman woman whom had taken Canute
as her second husband, completed the assimilation, and thus monarchy reigned in
England after a
period of anarchy.
