The Germanic tribes were known to be fierce in their time; Vikings were also Germanic or Teutonic tribes. The Roman could not fully conquer the Germanic tribes but a lot of this had to do with the dense forests of Germania. The barbarian used guerrilla warfare which was not the usual way the Romans fought. The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest was a good example of this, 17,000 Romans slaughtered by my ancestors. (1/4 German) Most of the primary sources I have read from the Romans describe the Celts and Germanics tribes as large, muscular and fierce. Their fierceness was influenced by their spiritual beliefs and their views of the afterlife. Some historians have accused the Celts of being head hunters.
