jeez!

The flags and the goosestepping sent my thoughts that way. Soldiers do not belong on a modern Olympic arena Dead

Otherwise it was a fantastic show.

---
Swedish television is just sending two boring women's football games right now. Thankfully Finnish TV has some better sense.

All the soldiers did was raise the flag. The looked smart. I have seen soldiers at FA Cup finals. Why pick on China.

US tourist dies in Beijing attack

Saturday, 9 August 2008 11:34 UK

A US tourist has been stabbed to death by a Chinese man in central Beijing, officials have said.
A second tourist was badly hurt in the attack at the Drum Tower monument. The pair are relatives of a US Olympic volleyball team coach.
The assailant then committed suicide by jumping from the 13th Century landmark, officials say. The motive is not known.
The BBC's Quentin Somerville says murders, especially targeting foreigners, are very rare in China.
The attack happened despite high security across the capital on the first full day of Olympic competition, with more than 150,000 police and other personnel on patrol.
Officials named the Chinese man as 47-year-old Tang Yongming, from the eastern town of Hangzhou, but said they had no idea what had motivated his attack or suicide.
"While at the Drum Tower in central Beijing, the two family members were stabbed during an attack by what local law enforcement authorities have indicated was a lone assailant," the International Olympic Committee said in a statement.
Reports say the tourists' guide was also hurt.
On the scene
The attack happened at the popular tourist attraction some three miles (5km) from the main Olympics site, at around midday local time.

The attack happened the day before US President George W Bush - in Beijing to attend the Games - is due to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao.
A US embassy spokesman said he was aware of the reports of the attack.
"I can tell you that we are working with the family and the Chinese authorities as we speak," Richard Buangan told AFP news agency.
US embassy officials have been despatched to the hospital where the two injured attack survivors have been sent.

Absolutely correct!!!

Speaking of Nazis...

Apparently the Nazis were responsible for introducing the tradition of the torch relay to the modern Olympic Games... this piece of propaganda first began in Berlin 1936 and has continued to this day...

I will finish now with an interesting quote from Adolf Hitler...

"The sportive, knightly battle awakens the best human characteristics. It doesn't separate, but unites the combatants in understanding and respect. It also helps to connect the countries in the spirit of peace. That's why the Olympic Flame should never die."

Apparently the air in Beijing is very high in clean fresh oxygen... which I'm sure all the athletes will enjoy competing in...

Making a hen out of a bird, are we? May be that people here are over-sensitive to flag-waving and marches, but no ridicule will change my view that goosestepping soldiers does not belong to the Olympics. I didn't, however, equate them with Nazis or even suggested that. Let's get back to watching the actual games, no?

Watching women's football China vs Canada and swtiching back and forth with women's volleyball Russia vs Italy.

Good game China vs Canada.  China had better possessions but Canada looked more dangerous in the box.  Canada scored first from a great looping pass that just went over not so great wall of the Chinese backline finding the Canadian striker in one on one with the Chinese keeper.  1:0, Canada.     I can't remember her name right now but they say that Canadian striker has som 120+ caps and 90+ goals in her international career.  Wow that's pretty impressive.  If she was a man....   let's not go there.   But China came right back with another great through pass that created one on one situation with the keeper .  The Canadian keeper came out.  The Chinese attacker veered off the her right drawing the keeper out even more, juke her off one more time and rolled it slowly but surely to the goal.  A Canadian defender tried to clear it sliding in but she was about ball width late.  Ilove those goals.  It seems like the time slows down when the ball rolls toward the empty net.  And the failed sliding clearance effort makes it even more dramatic.   1:1 tied.  Gosh, these Chinese girls are so much smaller than the Canadian girls.

Russia came out strong first and took the first set against the Italians  in women's volleyball but Italins came back and won three straight sets and won.  I guess the Italians are #2 and Russians are #8 but the Russians are the defending champs, so it should been more competitive but once the Italians got it going it was over.  The Russians look so much taller than the Italians but not as coordinated.  Just like men's football, looks like these Italian girls know how to defend also.  The setter(or is the defensive specialist now? you know the one with different color uniform) from Russian team is pretty hot, maybe because she's not a 7 footer.  Not that anything wrong with 7 footer chicks.  It makes no difference when you are lying down, I've heard. Big%20smile    I guess it's either the Russian coach is Italian or the Italian coach is Russian.   The commentator is saying that you only need about 25 words to coach a volleyball team.  Really?  That many?  I thought all you need to say is,'Dig! Dig!  Dig more!  Dig harder!.......'  Maybe that's just for the North Korean team.

Hey, Sparten, thanks for the info on Hockey.  I thought South Korean girls better than the men(well in many aspects they are but in Hockey in this case), but the girls didn't even it this time and men are coming in as the defending Asian champs.  India is not in either?  I thought they usually had good team too.   So, who are the other strong contenders?  The Dutch?  The Aussies?  Russia?  Spain?  maybe New Zealand?  I don't know.  Just for you Sparten, I will cheer for Pakistan unless they have play Korea.

Woooooo, Russia vs Korea in women's handball!   14:11 Russia still first half.  The Russian keeper is amazing.  If I ever picked up on a sport seriously, being the handball keeper would be one of the last ones I would consider.  The Russians are so much more bigger and physical though.  Woo, Korea won the 2 min powerplay!

The opening ceremony was definately one for the books, very spectacular. At the moment im watching the Japan vs. United States women's volleyball game. They both appear to be giving the fans what they want, a very great and intense game.

Barcelona is actually my second best, that was the first Olympics I saw when I had enough senses to understand what it was all about, I was 9. I always wondered if that archer missed what would the spaniards so to him?

The game ended 29:29 tie.  Great efforts from the both team, especially the Russian keeper.  Love the way Korean girls fought back from the deficit. 8 goals with less than 15 mins to go, that's pretty hard to comeback against a good team.

Cheers for both teams!ClapCheersThumbs%20Up

Exactly!China is trying to proove it's a "peaceful" and "tollerant" country, while religious, political and basic human rights are being ciolated.Did you notice that chinese and foreigners were put in different sectors?Obviously the government doesn't want their citizens to be in touch with foreigners - they might contract some dangerous desiese like free will, lust for democracy, demand for free media, human rights and such... South Korea's first gold!  Choi Min Ho in Men's Judo 60kg.

Past 4-5 Olympics, South Korea's goal has been 10, 10 and Japan;  10 Golds, 10th place and beat Japan in overall.  Taking one away from the Japan's gold mine is great start!
