No one mentioned Zhuge Liang. Is it because one considers him more of a tactician than a commander per se?

My favorites would have to be Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jackson. Both were extraordinary men. They were both outstanding military commanders, as well as good, noble people. They gave their all for what they believed in, and no one can take that away.

Liu Bang is also a ruler more than general, he was a bad general, he once asked Zhang Liang how many troops he should lead, Zhang Liang said as little as possible, Tang Tai Zong on the other hand is a general of the highest ability, there are some warrior emperors who fight like general and others are rulers, rulers are those like Qin Shi Huang, Han Wu Di, Tang xuan Zong, and Qian Long, their conquests are done by their generals rather than themselves, warrior emperors include(not counting the kings of Zhou) Guan Wu Di, Liu Yuan(Xiongnu Han dynasty), Fu Jian, Toba Tao, Sui Wen ti, Tang Tai Zong, Zhao Guan Yin. Zhu Yuan Zhang, Yong Le and Kang Xi, out of these many aren't superb commanders, however Tang Tai Zong not only showed the most terrific battle records for emperors but for all generals as a whole, in the Battle of Fan Sui and An Shi Chen he defeated armies numberering 30 and 5 times its size, ranking up there with the feats of Han Xin, Xiang Yu, and many others.
