Actually no, in the mid fifties Ayub Khan when he was Army chief proposed a joint Indo-Pak Mutual Defence Treaty against China. It was only in the early 60's, that we made the turn.

One of the crucial things was the recognition of PRC as China and it's rights over ROC(Taiwan). I am not sure if Pakistan was the first country to do this, but it might have been. During the Ayubid period Pakistan was a model for development, and foreign delegations used to visit Pakistan to asses the changes being implemented. Pakistan had better prospects than most ASEAN countries, who used to look toward it as a model.(According to an old guard Pakistani Bureaucrat)

In the Middle of the Indo/China war, Chinese even offered Pakistan to join the war to liberate Kashmir, realizing the weaker position of the Indians. It was the US that told Pakistan to refrain from such an action.

Another factor is that Pakistan always votes in favor of the Chinese in the UN.

I would have to go along and say India.  "The enemy of my enemy" sort of thing.  Remember, just as with the Soviets, the Chinese engaged in a brief, indecisive border skirmish with India in 1962.

They both get shunned by the western media all the time, maybe they like having an ally that doesn't criticize them constantly. When western countries try to impose their conception of human rights on countries with completely different morals and values its only natural they stick together and try to resist the pressure those western human rights activists (at least thats what they think of themselves) are always exerting.
And hey, no lobby groups to ruin a nice weapons exchange deal.
