Yeah, so we can discover and colonize new worlds and screw them up just as bad as we did this one... congratu-f*cking-lations, Mankind; or as we ought to put it, the Plague of Locusts.

let's all stop this pointless bickering and remember one thing: the respect and admiration we have for our friends, or comrades, the real heroes of the space race, the space monkeys

RIP little dude

The US will have a permanent moon colony by 2024, possibly earlier.

I can't think of a better start for this type of research

I heard that Bush Wants a moon base in 2010 and wants to be on Mars in 2020. And by the way have any of you ever read or heard about the Phobos Incident?

There is actual considerably research by private companies around the world, including U.S. and Japanese, for the construction of cheap deployable structures for a possible lunar base and even for mining asteroids near-Earth (possibly in the asteroid belt behind Mars).  I was surprised to find the amount of articles I found in different databases online on space construction projects.  It's actually quite fascinating - I thought it was all science fiction!

Research or military base, quite possible. Civilian colony? I doubt that will be possible by 2024, unless something really bad happens to the Earth..Confused

I worded that wrong. It will be a research facility, obviously. But it will be permanently occupied.

I think people here have made it clear that the space race is still going on.

US is the only nation to:
  1. Land a man on the moon and send him back to earth safely
  2. Sucessfully land space probes and rovers on Mars
  3. Sent space probes to the outer planets
  4. Sent space probes that left the solar system
  5. Sent more people in space than every one else

Ren & Stimpy.

other than that. well, if it was really a race, the first one gets the price, so USSR wins. really, it matters little if the other guy keeps on running for miles and then declares he won by claiming a new finish line and waiting for the real winner to quit the field...

The moon landings were a hoax, therefore Russia by default.

But on what basis was the USSR the 'first one'?  Why is simply orbiting a human being in a capsule the only meaningful 'finish line'?

Nobody won.

That's because the Soviets and Americans missed the point. So they both lost.
