But on what basis was the USSR the 'first one'? Why is simply orbiting a human being in a capsule the only meaningful 'finish line'?

the space race merely just began, China and Japan just send probes to the moon, and india by the end of the decade.

US is the only nation to:
- Land a man on the moon and send him back to earth safely
- Sucessfully land space probes and rovers on Mars
- Sent space probes to the outer planets
- Sent space probes that left the solar system
- Sent more people in space than every one else
