Topic: Books by Noam Chomsky? Posted: 08-Jun-2007 at 19:08 |
What is everybody's opinion of the books that have been written by Noam Chomsky? In my opinion he is a good writer, Although sometimes he can be out to lunch in big ways.

I would also recommend Chomksy to anyone who is;
1. An admitted Anti-American
2. A confirmed Socialist / Communist
3. Confused about politics or un-educated in Capitalism
4. Nuts! As is he!
You asked for our opinions!

I have a great respect for Chomsky bout as a linguist and as a political philosopher /I cannot find another way to classify his books on politics and power/. He is not a socialist though , I lived in a communist country for most of my life and know something about that. I see him mostly as Anarchist, but since the Anarchism as political philosophy is extremely misundetstood, I will not agrue is this is so or not. He had been includede in my favorite Anarhict Resource site, so that has to mean something. He is not Anti-American by any standard, he is more of a muck-raker, for which also he has my deep respect. All in all, I consider him the most important political modern philosopher since Hanna Arendt, and an exrtemely important linguist/philosopher of language.

Luckily a few days ago I came across a copy of Noam Chomsky's, "The Responsibility of Intellectuals". I have to admit that apart from the odd quote I hadn't read anything of his, but after reading this I'll be looking out for much more. Incredibly this work is as relevant today as it was in 1967 when first published. I like the thinking involved in this work and fits in well with my own beliefs, though it adds some to my knowledge that I was unaware off. I would recommend to anyone to read this work if they can find a copy.

I have no respect for Chomsky or his writings. But my opinion is, of course, totally irrelevant. Which is OK by me, because Chomsky and his writings are also totally irrelevant, except to those who already share his opinions. In which case, he is preaching to the choir. All hail the great denier of the Cambodian genocide. But wait! Now he denies that he ever was a denier.

When it comes to philosophy I cherry pick those bits I like, and with what I have read from Chomsky so far, which isn't much yet I must admit, I have liked.
