I'm very interested in learning about the history of ancient Europe, and I mean that in a very broad sense. Germanic tribes, the various invasions of England, proto-indo-europeans. However, the books I've found have been either too esoteric, presuming that I already know a great deal of specialized knowledge, or wind up being more about the historians and archaeologists responsible for various findings, rather than the findings themselves.

I'm not looking for European history for dummies, but perhaps a good jumping-off point?

Ummm, Peter Connolly who in many "romans" books talk about the enemy peoples of Rome

http://www.alibris.com/search/books/author/Connolly,%20Peter

Osprey Military "Rome's enemies" focused of course in war (see 1 to 5)

http://www.amazon.com/Romes-Enemies-Germanics-Dacians-Arms/dp/0850454735/ref=pd_sim_b_2/102-8265545-3474555

If you are looking more for economy, society, cotidian life that is more difficult for a broad level.

"Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" by Jared Diamond. It's a terrific book. Though it is not a historically enriched book, it discuss not only Europe emerged as world power, but world in general. Talks about how some civilizations emerged as world power, and why some declined. It's like a appetizer before historians actually engulf the details. Strongly recommended. Superb, in my opinion.
