Good question - not only do I have no idea - I don't even know where to begin looking to find out.  It has a modern feel to it - when did we start using scissors to cut paper? If it's comonly played in Asia it could be older - paper reached Europe much later.  Scissors in one form or another have been around a long time - but didn't Come into common use until the Renaissance.  The word scissors came into English through Old French, from the Latin caesus.  Wikipedia did have an article tracing the origin back to Rome  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock%2C_Paper%2C_Scissors#Histo ry

The most modern version that I have run into is  Foot - Cockroach - Nuclear Bomb

Foot squashes cockroach - Nuclear Bomb kills foot - cockroach survives even  Nuclear Devastation

The only thing that we can really learn from this is - if we're discussing it - we have way too much time on our hands.

In the time of your life, live - so that in that wonderous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it. (Saroyan)

It originated in theCentral Asian Steppes in what is now Krgyzstan in the 11th century AD by Turkic seminomadic tribes as a game of chance when two competing suitors were asking the hand of one bride in marriage. The winner got the girl andthe loser was killed by a stampede of oxen!
