4 Ordibehesht,  Shahrivar = Strong & Progressive Leadership

1980: Operation Eagle Claw (in Iran, Majaraie Tabas) failed.

The wreckage of a Sea Stallion helicopter at the Desert One base in Iran

Operation Eagle Claw (or Operation Evening Light) was a United States military operation to rescue the 53 hostages from the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran on April 24, 1980. The operation was a failure, and had a severe impact on US President Jimmy Carter's re-election prospects; on a military level, it led to the creation of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and the U.S. Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (the Night Stalkers).

The hostages were released via diplomatic negotiations after 444 days of captivity.

Planned as Operation Rice Bowl, the operation was designed as a complex two-night mission. The first stage of the mission involved establishing a small staging site inside Iran itself, near the Tabas in the Yazd Province (formerly in the south of the Khorasan province) of Iran. The site, known as Desert One, was to be used as a temporary airstrip for the C-130 Hercules transport planes and RH-53 Sea Stallion minesweeper helicopters which would undertake the actual rescue operation. After refueling the helicopters the plan was for the ground troops to board the helicopter and fly to Desert Two near Tehran. After locating and extracting the hostages from Tehran, the rescuers and rescuees would be transported by helicopter to Manzariyeh Air Base outside of Tehran, where C-130 transports would take them out of the country under the protection of fighter aircraft.

A combination of equipment failure and unforeseen low-level sandstorms caused the mission to be aborted, but only after men and equipment had been assembled at Desert One. After the helicopters had refueled, one drifted into a C-130 while lifting off. In the ensuing explosion and fire, eight servicemen lost their lives; five USAF aircrew in the C-130, and three USMC aircrew in the MH-53. During the evacuation, five MH-53 helicopters were left behind, intact, containing plans which identified CIA agents within Iran. Wounded personnel, mostly with heavy burns, arrived at Incirlik Air Base at Adana in Turkey by C-130, straight from Desert One.

1981 - The first IBM PC is introduced.

Of course leading to "IBM compatible" computers, the computers Dos and later Windows were built on.  If not for this day, we'd all be using Apple perhaps

St. Nicholas I begins his reign as Catholic Pope.

He is remembered as a consolidator of Papal authority and power, exerting decisive influence upon the historical development of the papacy and its position among the Christian nations of western Europe, and is considered a saint.

He refused to grant an annulment to Lothar II from Theutberga so that Lothar could marry his mistress Waldrada; when a Council pronounced in favor of annulment, Nicholas I declared the Council to be deposed, its messengers excommunicated, and its decisions void. Despite pressure from the Carolingians, who laid siege to Rome, his decision held. During his reign, relations with the Byzantine Empire soured over his support for Ignatius as Patriarch of Constantinople, who had been removed and Photius appointed to replace him.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Nicholas_I

Good day to all!

Also occurring today in women's history:

1847 - Susan Dimock was born in Washington, North Carolina, USA to Mary M. Owens (a teacher) and Henry Dimock (a lawyer). After her father died, Dimock and her mother moved to Boston, where she entered a court study at NEHWC ( New England Hospital for Women and Children). She applied twice to, and was rejected twice by, Harvard University Medical School, so she turned to Europe and attended the University of Zurich. Three years later, she graduated and trained in European hospitals. She returned to Boston, but the all-male North Carolina Medical Society would only grant her honorary membership, even though she requested full membership. She specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, she developed a private practice and also developed the first graded school of nursing in the United States. Tragically, Dr. Dimock lost her life on May 8, 1875, at the age of 28, in a shipwreck on a voyage to Europe for rest and study before resuming her profession. Along with two friends, Dr. Dimock boarded an iron-rigged steamship, bound for Europe, which met destruction on a reef off the Scilly Isles, while sailing through heavy fog.    They were among the 311 people who drowned.
A historic marker honoring Dr. Susan Dimock stands on East Main Street. Her tombstone can be viewed at the St. Peters Episcopal Church cemetery.

1905 - Helen Tamiris was born in New York City. Her original name was Helen Becker. She was an American choreographer, modern dancer and teacher. She was one of the first to make use of jazz, Negro spirituals, and social-protest themes in her work. Helen Becker began her dance studies with Irene Lewisohn in freestyle movement. She later trained in ballet with Michael Fokine and at the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School.

1942 - Barbra Streisand was born. She won two Academy Awards (one for Best Actress and one for Best Original Song). She is a singer, film actress, composer, film producer, film director, theater. Is there anyone in the world who does not know who this woman is?

24th of April is the day when 2345 Armenian comiteers were arrested because of treason to the state. They were arrested after some Armenian militants of 10,000 men (which Armenian katagikos of Ecmiyazin, Kevork organized) started a rebel in the city of Van, to cleanse the land from its Muslim inhabitants for a homogenious Armenian states fitting Wilson rules.

The civilian "deportations" began in 27th of May.

Well when they call doctors and writers "traitors" and justify their public hanging (without trial, mind you) then you can't really have a healthy discussion. Best thing to do is walk away...

do you really believe Iranians deny the holocaust? of course not...just because their president denies it doesnt  mean the people do too.  Plus he denies to get support from radicals, who hate Israel...its just a publicity stunt, and a bad one at that.
