Topic: The most majestic beast in ancient time Posted: 22-Nov-2004 at 00:26 |
Here are some facts: http://www.sandiegozoo.org/animalbytes/t-tiger.html
Class: Mammalia (Mammals) Order: Carnivora Family: Felidae Genus: Panthera Species: tigris Subspecies: altaica (Siberian or Amur) tigris (Bengal or Indian) corbetti (Indochinese) amoyensis (South China) sumatrae (Sumatran) Length: largestSiberian tiger, with males 10 feet (3 meters) long; smallestSumatran tiger, with males 8 feet (2.4 meters) long Weight: Siberian tiger males400 pounds and up (181 kilograms); Sumatran tiger males220 pounds (100 kilograms) Life span: 15 to 20 years in the wild, up to 26 years in zoos Gestation: about 103 days Number of young at birth: up to 7, but average is 2 to 3 Size at birth: 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) Age of maturity: 3 to 6 years Conservation status: all tiger species are endangered.
Fun Facts Each tiger has its very own stripe pattern. Researchers who observe tigers can identify individuals by their unique stripes! Other interesting tiger markings are the white spots on the backs of their ears. This may be a visual cue for tigers looking for other tigers, or it may be a way for mothers to keep their cubs in sight in the dense forest undergrowth. Some cats do like waterand tigers are among them! On a hot, steamy day in the Asian forest, tigers will take to the river to cool off. In colder climates, they enjoy the snow.

Class: Mammalia (Mammals) Order: Carnivora Family: Felidae Genus: Panthera Species: leo Subspecies: Panthera leo (African) Panthera leo persica (Asian) Length: males5.6 to 8.3 feet (1.7 to 2.5 meters); females4.6 to 5.7 feet (1.4 to 1.7 meters); tail is 27 to 41 inches (70 to 105 centimeters) Shoulder height: males4 feet (1.2 meters); females 3.5 feet (one meter) Weight: males330 to 550 pounds (150 to 250 kilograms); females265 to 400 pounds (120 to 180 kilograms) Life span: 15 years in the wild, up to 30 in zoos Gestation: almost 4 months Number of young at birth: 1 to 6, usually 3 to 4 in a litter Size at birth: 3 pounds (1.5 kilograms) Age of maturity: 3 to 4 years Conservation status: the Asian lion is vulnerable; the African lion is not currently endangered, but there is no space for it to live in Africa outside of parks and reserves
Fun Facts Some male lions do not have manes, seen most often in East Africa. Lions can often survive in extreme drought conditions, eating tsama melons for moisture in the Kalahari Desert. Lions are the only members of the cat family to have males and females that look distinctly different. Only lions have a tuft of dark hairs on the tips of their tails, which helps them communicate with other lions in their pride.

to me in terms of live animals the cats have superiority over all else....they are cunning hunters, and they have incredible agility and reflexes....
In terms of mythical i would have to say cerberus....i mean come on hes the guardian to the underworld...and he has three heads what more can one ask for in a pet

Problem #1: Tigers are not found in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Problem #2: The general impression is tigers stalk their preys by skulking, lions stalk their preys openly. Both are feared for their strength, but the tiger has a more sinister aura while the lion lies fearlessly in the open. There is hardly any record of lions fighting tigers, so when royalty wants a symbol of might and majesty ...

Depends. Singapore has both lions and tigers in the state emblem.

Quite embarassing actually, both were there due to errr, mistakes, from the past.
A prince from Sumatra was sailing for adventure and got tossed to the island, traditionally known as Temasek, by a storm. He saw a strange creature, and was told by his advisors it was a "Singa", lion in his language. There was no record of lions in the region, only tigers, so it was considered as mistake number one. Thus Temasek became Singapura, or lion city, corrupted to Singapore by the British.
The tiger represented the republic's historical links with Malaysia which use the tiger in their emblems. A couple of years after independence from the British in which Singapore was part of the Federation of Malaysia, Singapore formally separated after acrimonous relationship.

"Problem #1: Tigers are not found in Europe, Middle East and Africa."
Irrelevant, since the topic is not about where they meet.

The scientific study SHOWS that tigers are more massively built and larger on average. The only advantage of lions are mane.
And THERE ARE records of lion tiger combats, Ancient Korea have a number of these battles, at first they used Korean tigers which was rare and therefore have less fighting capability, the lion usually triumphed, yet when they took the tigers from the nepalese valley, the tigers always prevailed.

The relevance of point #1 is to indicate why lions as symbols are more widespread.
Point #2 is without a staged fight, people in the past would hardly know which would win - and that would not be the determining factor to decide which to adopt as their symbol of noble houses or royal dynasties.

Which is not what I'm talking about, my point is tigers are more powerful.
"Point #2 is without a staged fight, people in the past would hardly know which would win - and that would not be the determining factor to decide which to adopt as their symbol of noble houses or royal dynasties."
It doesn't matter they know or not, tigers was stronger as scientific and staged fights proved.
"actually so far your all wrong, the strongest cat is the Jaguar, look it up I swear its true."
No, Jaguars are the strongest for its size, yet its size is merely half that of the Nepalese tigers which could easily overwhelm Jaguars, Jaguars also lacks boldness as can be seen by the lack of men it kills when men is a daily prey for the tigers of sunbardan.
